A Prayer Vigil For The Earth

Earth Meditation
Offered by the meditative practice of Lorrie Eaton
Look at the well-known NASA picture of Earth or whatever picture of Earth you'd prefer. Then place your hand on your heart and say the following invocation.

Let this beautiful planet be filled
with loving kindness.

Let this beautiful planet be well
and healthy.

Let this beautiful planet be filled
with loving kindness.

Let this beautiful planet be well
and healthy.

Let this Mother Earth be filled
with great joy, peace and understanding.

Let this beautiful planet, our home, be filled
with good will and the will-to-love.

And so it shall be.

The words of the invocation vary, but the tone is always the same.

Following this, pick a place to start, i.e., either the core of the Earth, the water, the crust, or the highest mountains. Then visualize the molecules that make up your chosen place adhering to each other, bound by the Creator's love.

For example, imagine the molten core of Mother Earth resonating with the heartbeat of creation. Moving from the place you have chosen, envision the oceans, the ground water, the lakes, waterfalls, the rivers, etc. all filled with loving kindness. As you are doing so, imagine all the molecules dancing with joy. Then see everything that lives in the waters, the coral, seahorses, trout, algae, etc. purifying the water, living in total harmony. Express thankfulness to those in the unseen world who are helping clean and purify the water. Then move onto the air, the crusts, the mountains and whatever has your attention radiating love as you go.

Next send love to all beings... Then imagine the unseen spiritual masters and teachers, the incarnated spiritual leaders, political leaders, and others flooded with loving kindness and overshadowed by love for the soul. Move on to the geographical areas of the world that are suffering (Bosnia, Russia, Ruwanda, etc.) and imagine all the people shaking hands and circling the globe as one family. Finally, see loving kindness within and surrounding your friends, family, professional life, and community. Close with thankfulness to the Earth for the gift of life. Join Us!

"Historian and social critic Christopher Lasch (1932-1994) described this topic in his book, "The Culture of Narcissism",^[3] published in 1979. He defines a narcissistic culture as one in which every activity and relationship is defined by the hedonistic need to acquire the symbols of material wealth, this becoming the only expression of rigid, yet covert, social hierarchies. It is a culture where liberalism only exists insofar as it serves a consumer society, and even art, sex and religion lose their liberating power.

In such a society of constant competition there can be no allies, and little transparency.
